Penghargaan akan diberikan dalam 25 kategori: 14 untuk film layar lebar, dan 11 untuk film televisi. Di kategori film, Birdman, meraih nominasi terbanyak dengan tujuh nominasi. Sejumlah nama yang sejak lama diprediksi akan masuk nominasi di berbagai ajang penghargaan perfilman, seperti Jennifer Aniston untuk film Cake, menjadi kenyataan.
Golden Globe ke-72 ini akan berlangsung pada 11 Januari 2015 di Grand Ballroom Beverly Hilton Hotel. Sebelumnya juga telah diumumkan bahwa putri aktor Kelsey Grammer, Greer Grammer, dan Barrie Buckner (pemain acara Awkward di MTV), akan menjadi Miss Golden Globe 2015.
